50 year ad

Back in December 1951 Robert Lyle moved from Saintfield with his parents to Ballyrobert. They lived in a red brick bungalow beside the garage, which at that time consisted of a small filling station and workshop. Through the 1950’s the Lyle family bought and sold second hand vehicles.

In June 1960 Ballyrobert was appointed as a main Vauxhall dealer in the area. Their first press advert in Co Down Spectator shows the prices of the new Victor at £716, Velox £929 and top of range Cresta at £1,014.

In the 70’s the Magnum. Chevette, Cavalier and Carlton were all introduced. During 1980’s Astra production began at Ellesmere Port and the first diesel engines were available in Astra and Cavalier. The Nova also joined the Vauxhall family in 1983.

In 1988 the millionth Cavalier was sold.

The 1990’s saw the launch of the Calibra coupe, Frontera (which was Vauxhall’s first recreational four wheel drive), Corsa replaced the Nova and Omega became new flagship model.

In 1990’s Robert’s two children John and Jayne joined the business after completing their degrees at University. John is Managing Director whilst Jayne is Marketing Director. Robert still keeps a close eye on them.

In 1995 Vauxhall celebrated 90 years in Luton and Vectra replaced the much-loved Cavalier.

Just prior to the millennium New Vectra and Zafira MPV were launched and in the millennium year Ballyrobert took delivery of VX220, Astra coupe, new Agila and brand new Corsa range.

In 2001 Ballyrobert acquired a Vauxhall dealership Dencourt Motors at Mallusk, which they then re-named Ballyrobert.

In the later part of the 2000’s, Ballyrobert received the brand new Insignia, which replaced Vectra, and the Antara Vauxhall’s Sports Utility Vehicle was added to the range. The Agila, Corsa and Astra have also since been updated.

The Meriva was first launched in 2003 and on the 20th June 2010 Ballyrobert will celebrate the launch of all new Meriva at Mount Stewart, Newtownards. The new model is set to turn heads with its interior versatility and hinged back doors.

So if you would like to celebrate the launch with Ballyrobert team and have a look at vehicles of Yesteryear, please contact Lisa Kelly at Ballyrobert on 0845 362 5212 or email info@ballyrobert.co.uk to reserve your place.
