Consumer Rights Act 2015
The Consumer Rights Act replaces a number of laws about business-to-consumer transactions,
including the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982.
It is intended to clarify the standards a consumer can expect when they buy something. The act
also introduces a new set of rights for dissatisfied consumers.
For details of changes to the Consumer Right’s Act 2015 please refer to legislation.gov.uk
Alternative dispute resolution
In addition to the new rights and remedies in the Consumer Rights Act 2015, there is an additional
consumer legislation that came into effect on 9th July. To be legally compliant all industries must be
able to direct consumers to a Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) certified Alternative
Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider.
As such from 1st October 2015, all dealers will have to provide consumers with details of an
approved ADR provider such as Motor Codes in the event of an unresolved dispute. Dealers will
need to inform consumers about their ADR provision on their website terms and conditions.
In the event of an unresolved customer dispute relating to service of repair work dealers will need to
advise the consumer of the following on a ‘durable medium' i.e. on paper or email for future
