Lotus 3-Eleven – Road and Race versions

Lotus has managed to produce some of the fastest road cars around – and none more so than the 3-Eleven. This head-turning automobile is available in two iterations – Road and Race, both of which are extremely lightweight. The Race edition is the lighter of the two, and comes with additional motorsports-ready components.

Exterior

With the 3-Eleven, Lotus has taken “focused minimalism” to the next level. In addition to utilising generous levels of carbon fibre, the vehicle comes without a roof, windscreen or doors, and the car’s chassis is constructed using extruded aluminium. It’s this stripped-down approach and combination of lightweight materials that has resulted in its 925kg weight. The 3-Eleven is also designed with optimal aerodynamics and downforce in mind. A striking rear wing (which is adjustable with Race variants), certainly helps with the former. The vehicle rides on 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels (front and rear, respectively), which feature a dazzling 10-spoke design and gloss-black finish. Each is fitted with Michelin Pilot Super Sport (Road) or Cup 2 (Race) tyres that deliver exceptional grip.

Interior

Inside a deliberately spartan cockpit, there’s a single position for the driver; a lightweight sports seat that comes with Road models. Race owners, meanwhile, have the benefit of an FIA-rated competition seat. Whether speeding around a circuit or travelling by road, the driver has a full-colour TFT display screen at his or her disposal. This helps with monitoring drive mode selections for both road and track.

Performance

Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, the 3-Eleven Road’s supercharged 3.5-litre engine puts out 410bhp and delivers a peak torque of 410Nm. This V6 unit enables the car to go from 0-60mph in 3.3 seconds and achieve a top speed of 174mph.

Not to be outdone, the Race edition, which is fitted with six-speed Xtrac sequential transmission (complete with paddle-shift controls), produces 460bhp, and 525Nm of torque. This version proceeds to 60mph in less than three seconds and peaks at 180mph.

Technology and safety

The 3-Eleven’s range of competition-derived driver aids includes – for the Road version, Torsen Limited Slip Differential. The Race variant, meanwhile, comes with Xtrac cassette-type plate differential, making it suitable for official FIA events. Anti-lock Braking System and Adjustable Traction Control are included as standard too, each of which is Lotus-tuned. Four-piston callipers also feature, providing an extremely precise feel when braking. Furthermore, servo-assisted two-piece groove-ventilated brakes quickly dissipate any build-up of heat.
