Lotus Elise Cup 250

The Lotus Elise Cup 250 is effectively a racetrack-ready car that can be legally driven on the highways and byways of Northern Ireland and elsewhere. Whenever you get the chance to put the vehicle through its paces on a motorsports circuit, its undoubted performance qualities will truly come to the fore.

The Cup 250 features a smartly contrasting black soft-top canopy which, when in place, helps the car to achieve optimal performance levels. The vehicle rides on ultra-lightweight black forged alloy wheels – 17 inches at the rear and 16 inches at the front, and each is wrapped in Yokohama ADVAN tyres. Specially made to withstand high speeds, these formidable chunks of rubber provide superb grip, whether you’re on a race track, motorway or driving around town.

The Cup 250’s cockpit boasts a black Alcantara trim, complete with a choice of red or yellow contrast stitching, which adorns the car’s seats, door panels and elsewhere. You and your co-passenger are provided with supportive, comfortable carbon fibre sports seats. Once in place, you’ll enjoy handling the vehicle’s black leather-clad steering wheel, leather-sleeved handbrake and polished aluminium gear knob. The latter is purposefully exposed at its base. This is one of many examples of Lotus designers’ determination to keep the Cup 250’s weight as low as possible. They’ve succeeded too, because the car has a dry weight of just 884kg.

The vehicle takes its name from the torque figure it delivers, which is available between 3,500rpm and 5,000rpm. A 1.8-litre 243bhp petrol engine powers this Elise variant, producing 0-60mph in less than four seconds and a maximum speed of 154mph. Even with its hood removed, the car still delivers as much as 149mph. It’s something of a miracle, then, that it still manages up to 37.7mpg.

Technology and safety

According to Lotus, the Cup 250 is all about “focused minimalism”, which means eschewing features that the average driver would take for granted. This is in order to maintain the car’s low weight. Naturally, the owner of a Lotus sports car is not your typical motorist. Having said that, this potent vehicle is duly fitted with extremely effective motorsport-calibrated brakes. What’s more, the car also features race-tuned Anti-lock Braking System that helps keep skidding to an absolute minimum.
