The Lotus Elise Race 250 sums up the British marque’s racing ethos: Focused Minimalism. This has resulted in a car that has been created with optimal performance levels in mind, and at the expense of fixtures that anyone but a true driving enthusiast would consider essential. Happily, it’s a line of thinking that has led to this gorgeous, race-ready sports car.
The Race 250 is discernibly broader than previous Elise iterations, most noticeably thanks to its front splitter and side sills. At the rear of the vehicle, a spoiler and adjustable wing are appealingly conspicuous, as is the car’s rear diffuser. Nevertheless, this particular variant still maintains the Elise’s distinctively curvy yet angular good looks. The Race 250 is crowned with a fixed hardtop – all the better for helping with optimal acceleration. The vehicle’s black forged-alloy wheels sport a striking ten-spoke design, and each is encased in Yokohama ADVAN tyres that provide first-rate grip.
The driver is able to sink into a carbon-fibre race seat that comes FIA-approved and features a six-point harness to keep him or her fully secure. A four-point-harnessed equivalent is available for a co-passenger too, as an option. As vehicle weight is of primary focus, the Race 250’s interior components are kept to an absolute minimum, although features such as air conditioning can be specified. That said, the vehicle does come with power-operated windows as standard, and possesses a starter button that gets the car underway.
The Elise Race 250 is propelled by a 1.8-litre 243bhp petrol engine, attached to which is a slick-changing six-speed manual gearbox. This four-cylinder unit produces a punchy 250Nm of torque, 0-60mph in less than four seconds and a top speed of 154mph. In tandem with a dry vehicle weight of no more than 900kg, and an aerodynamically optimised body, this supercharged engine helps to deliver the car’s blistering pace.
Despite its low weight, the vehicle’s extruded and bonded chassis is extremely strong. At the front, the Race 250 features an anti-roll bar too, which is adjustable. The car is also fitted with door side impact beams that provide additional protection. Another standard inclusion is race-tuned Anti-lock Braking System, which delivers optimal traction, even at high speeds. Hydraulic Brake Assist features too, which provides an automatic boost to braking pressure. Meanwhile, Cornering Brake Control delivers enhanced stabilisation whenever brakes are applied when the car is turning.
