The Lotus Exige Race 380 more than lives up to the ‘race’ part of its name. It is, indeed, track-ready, and the fact that it’s super-stylish too certainly doesn’t hurt. This supercar provides lashings of downforce and is perfectly optimised to deliver exceptional aerodynamics – all of which helps make it one of the fastest road-legal automobiles around.
Viewed from any direction – and especially from the front, the Exige Sport 380 looks as if it means business, which, indeed, it does. The car’s prominent, cat-like headlamps and expansive air inlets alone give the appearance of a vehicle that’s ready to gobble up the road ahead of it. The curvy window line rises to peak with an impressive tailgate-mounted wing. Generous quantities of carbon fibre have gone into this car’s making, ensuring that it is as light as possible, and constructed to deliver the aforementioned aerodynamics and downforce. The vehicle comes with a soft-top as standard, but a removable hard-top is also available as an option.
The driver gets to slide into a HANS-compatible, FIA-compliant carbon fibre seat, secured with a six-point harness. A performance steering wheel is included too, with quick-release functionality, making it easier to vacate the cockpit in the event of a collision. It’s also a useful safeguard against theft, because, if you wish, you can take it with you whenever you leave the car. Located behind the steering wheel are carbon paddles, which operate the vehicle’s pneumatic gearshift.
The Exige Race 380 is one of the fastest straight-line supercars around, with a 3.5-litre V6 engine that really makes it tick. Mated to an Xtrac six-speed sequential gearbox, this supercharged unit produces 375bhp and delivers 410Nm of torque. The car achieves 0-60mph in just 3.2 seconds and is capable of a top speed of 170mph.
The vehicle is fitted with a range of Lotus-specific driver aids, including Traction Control System and Anti-lock Braking System. Occupants are provided with further protection, such as a fully integrated roll cage. The vehicle’s lightning-quick acceleration and speed are tempered by two-piece high-performance grooved brake discs, which are manufactured by motorsport specialists, AP Racing. A competition-standard fire extinguisher is included in the cockpit. You’ll probably never need it, but it’s nevertheless an excellent precaution.
