The Lotus Elise Sport 220 not only looks great, it’s an absolute joy to drive. Unassisted steering provides the driver with excellent feedback from the car’s wheels, allowing him or her to feel part of every twist and turn.
The Elise Sport 220 is an impressive automotive beast. Its lightweight and curvaceous body possesses quite a few conspicuous peaks, from the distinctive front headlights, to an elevated rear spoiler. Below the latter is an optimised black diffuser, which has been specially crafted to deliver superb aerodynamics. The car rides on 16-inch silver-cast (front) alloy wheels and 17-inch black-forged (rear) alloy wheels too, and each is encased in Yokohama ADVAN Neova tyres.
A part-leather-upholstered cabin features two sports seats, and the person behind the wheel is provided with an excellent driving position. This lucky individual also gets to grip the Elise Sport 220’s black leather steering wheel, leather-wrapped handbrake and polished-aluminium gear knob. To start the car’s engine and embark on a new and exciting adventure, all that is required is the single press of a dashboard-mounted button.
The 220 is powered by a rear-positioned 1.8-litre petrol engine, which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. This supercharged unit produces 217bhp, 250Nm of torque and 0-60mph in approximately four seconds. The vehicle is capable of a top speed of 145mph too. Despite its lightning-quick acceleration and power, this sports car manages to deliver up to 37.7mpg.
The car is fitted with a four-speaker Alpine sound system, which includes an MP3-compatible CD player and an FM/AM radio for your listening pleasure. A number of driver aids are included as standard too, such as Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), which prevents a wheel from spinning out of sync with another on the same axle. EDL automatically applies brake pressure too, where necessary. It also delivers enhanced grip and minimises wear and tear on tyres when travelling at speeds of up to 25mph. Anti-lock Braking System is another standard inclusion and optimises traction. Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, meanwhile, analyses the air pressure of each tyre and relays the resulting information to the driver in real time. Occupants are also protected by airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners and head restraints.
